本周我们来学习与健康相关的词汇。

 

1. allergy /ə'lɜːdʒɪ/

n. 过敏反应;过敏症

剑桥听力17-4-1:We also offer a special vacuum cleaning system which can improve the indoor air quality of your home by capturing up to 99% of all the dust in the air. So if you’re troubled by allergies, this can make a big difference.

 

adj. allergic 对…过敏的;

常见搭配:be allergic to

e.g. After sneezing several times, I realized I was allergic to fur of cats.

sneeze v.打喷嚏

 

2. susceptible /sə'septɪb(ə)l/

adj. 易患病的; 易受伤的

常见搭配:be susceptible to

e.g. A sedentary lifestyle is believed to compromise immune system, making people susceptible to infections and illnesses.

e.g. Antibodies from vaccination wane over time, making us more susceptible to infection.

compromise v. 损害

vaccination n. 疫苗

e.g. Young people are the most susceptible to advertisements...

e.g. The elderly population is susceptible to financial scams, so it's important to educate them about potential fraud schemes.

3. medical /'medɪk(ə)l/

n. 体格检查;体检

剑桥听力9-4-1:and finally, if you need to prove you are healthy or have not had any serious injuries before a new employer will accept you, you can get a free fitness check-up there, but you’d most likely to pay for insurance medicals though.

4. chronic /'krɒnɪk/

adj. (疾病、残疾)慢性的,长期的

a chronic disease / health problem 慢性病

e.g. The chronic disease troubled the rest of his life.

e.g. Someone who has chronic insomnia regularly has difficulty getting enough sleep.

e.g. Chronic diseases such as asthma, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes are linked to air pollution.

反义词:acute adj.急性的

e.g. After twisting his ankle during the basketball game, John experienced acute pain and had difficulty walking.

 

5. hale and hearty

idiom:身体健康;强壮

e.g. Despite his advanced age, Grandpa remains hale and hearty, still enjoying his daily walks and gardening.

e.g. After a good night's sleep, she woke up feeling hale and hearty, ready to tackle the day.
