gay最起初用来表示full of joy, merry, light-hearted, carefree，19世纪末期它有了色情的色彩，例如a gay house指的是妓院。
20世纪30年代时, gay man用来表示喜欢女人也喜欢男人的男人。40年代时，这个词开始被小范围的用于表示homosexual，50年代后开始流行起来。
